Behind the scenes

How we make our Playbooks

A lot of care goes into every page your child reads. Here is the journey each Playbook takes, from the first idea to the final check.

Part 1

Designing a Playbook

Every Playbook starts on paper, long before a picture is drawn.

A finished page: the big rule, with a diagram and a Coach’s tipMia, a character drawn the same way in every book
  1. Step 1

    Listen and research

We start with what families and coaches find hard about rugby, and what young players at each age need. Ideas are always our own.

  2. Step 2

    One skill, one age

Each Playbook gets a short brief: who it is for, the one skill it teaches, and what your child should be able to do by the end.

  3. Step 3

    Plan every page

We map the story page by page: what happens, which character speaks, and where each picture, diagram and activity goes.

  4. Step 4

    Write in plain words

Short sentences, the right length for the age, and rugby words explained the first time they appear.

  5. Step 5

    Draw the scenes

Every scene uses our approved characters, drawn the same way in every book, so your child always knows who is who.

  6. Step 6

    Lay out the pages

Text, pictures and diagrams are set on each page, sized to read comfortably on a tablet or phone, with printable activity pages.

Part 2

Building and checking

Then every Playbook goes through a checklist. Nothing is released until every check passes and our founder signs it off.

  1. Step 1

    Rugby check

Every rugby point is checked against World Rugby’s laws. Where a page teaches a rule, grown-ups get the law’s own wording in a Coach’s tip.

  2. Step 2

    Safety check

Beginners learn without contact, safety notes sit where they are needed, and junior rules come from your country.

  3. Step 3

    Age and reading check

Words, sentence length and page count are checked against our guide for that age group.

  4. Step 4

    Picture check

Each picture must match the words on its page, down to which way the players are running, and every character must match their design.

  5. Step 5

    Originality check

Stories, characters and pictures are our own. Anything that looks too close to someone else’s work is changed before release.

  6. Step 6

    Read and approved

Every page is read through and approved before a Playbook is marked ready. If something is not right, it goes back a step.

  7. Step 7

    Final file check

The finished file is checked page by page before it is released to families.

A finished page: both teams shake hands after the game

Little details matter. If the words say Mia runs towards the try line, the picture shows her running that way.

The founder leads. AI helps.

Every Playbook begins with our founder. The vision, the design and the page-by-page instructions come from there. Behind the scenes, several professional tools, including AI, help us turn that vision into the best quality Playbook we can make.
